Basic Information
A rainforest biome is amongst the most interesting and beautiful biomes present in the world. Rainforest biomes are incredibly important to our world. Without them, we'd lack many resources and would struggle to have sufficient oxygen levels to breathe. By reading through this tour guide, you'll see why visiting a rainforest will be the best thing that you can do.
There are two types of rainforests: tropical and temperate. This site will focus on tropical rainforests.
So, what is a rainforest? A rainforest is a luxuriant, dense forest rich in biodiversity, found typically in tropical areas with consistently heavy rainfall. Rainforests used to cover 14% of the world, containing millions of plant and animal species, many of which that are still to be discovered. Due to deforestation, only 7% of the Earth is covered by rainforests. Rainforests are vital to our planet because they provide us with numerous resources, are home to Indigenous communities, contain over half of the world's plant and animal species and keep our atmosphere levels stable by storing the carbon dioxide we breathe out and providing us with oxygen to breathe in.

A tropical rainforest will have 4 distinct layers: the ground floor, consisting of soil that lacks nutrients. The forest floor has little vegetation because of the lack of sunlight that reaches the area. The understory consists of vines, epiphytes, absorbing the last of the sunlight provided. The layer above is the canopy, consisting of thick layer of trees that absorb the majority of the sunlight. The emergent layer is the highest layer. A few trees spaced widely apart grow higher than the canopy to receive sunlight. Due to these various layers, it takes over 10 minutes for rainfall to reach the forest floor.
This website will be focussing on The Amazon Forest, the largest tropical rainforest in the world. Located in South America, the Amazon Rainforest is still home to many tribes which have no contact with the outside world. Going on a tour around a tropical rainforest is an exhilarating and life changing experience. If you want to find out more, continue reading!
