Plants
You'll be amazed by the incredible diversity in plant species when you go to a tropical rainforest. There are approximately 3000 known plant species in a rainforest biome. Plants on the understory don't receive much sunlight. Hence, to survive, they live off trunks and branches of larger trees. The types of plants in a rainforest biome are: lianas, epiphytes, parasites and saprophytes. Lianas are thick vines that are located in the understory, just below the canopy. Epiphytes don't need to live on soil because they live off branches of trees without damaging their host. Types of epiphytes are ferns and mosses. Most parasites are fungi which take their food off other living vegetation in a tropical rainforest biome. Saprophytes are similar to parasites except they do not gain their nutrients from other living things. They instead gain their nutrients from dead matter.
Most flora such as flowers are located in the canopy layer. This is because the canopy layer attracts the most sunlight for photosynthesis, allowing much vegetation to grow in the area.

Animals
Millions of plant an animal species in rainforests haven't even been discovered yet. Scientists say that rainforests contain a large amount of the world's fauna because of the age of the rainforest itself. Some rainforests are millions of years old, meaning that animals have evolved and adapted to their environment, creating an incredibly diverse and complex system. All fauna in a rainforest biome has adapted to its environment in many ways. For example, chameleons are able to camouflage to save themselves from predators.
A tropical rainforest will contain many living species such as: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Birds, vultures, parrots and eagles are mainly located on the emergent layer. The canopy layer contains most of the living species such as monkeys, squirrels, sloths, iguanas and pythons. Amphibians are located on the understory because they need water from streams to survive. The king of the jungle, the jaguar, is also located in the understory amongst chameleons.
Each tropical rainforest in the world has different animals. The South-East Asian forests have the Bengal Tiger. The West African forest have the African Elephant and The Amazon Forest has the Giant Anteater.
